Our Verdict on FOREX.com

FOREX.com is a multi-market trading brand operated through separate StoneX entities, with products, account terms and protections that depend on a client’s location. Trading is available through its own platforms and third-party software, with spread-only and raw-spread pricing options.

Best For: Active traders who value platform choice, research tools and access to several markets, and are prepared to check the terms applying to their contracting entity.

Key Strength: The combination of proprietary platforms, MetaTrader, TradingView and API access offers several ways to trade and automate strategies.

Main Limitation: Leverage, product availability, hedging rules and client protections vary by jurisdiction; headline terms should not be assumed to apply to every account.

Verdict: FOREX.com offers broad platform functionality and multiple pricing approaches, but its suitability depends on the local entity and the costs and safeguards attached to the specific account.

Is FOREX.com Safe and Regulated?

4.7/5

FOREX.com operates through separate StoneX companies, so the regulator and protections applicable to a client depend on the contracting entity and location. A brand-level description is not a substitute for checking the legal entity named in the account documents.

Regulatory Licences

StoneX Financial Pty Ltd — ASIC, licence/reference AFSL 345646 (Australian clients).

StoneX Financial Inc. — CFTC, licence/reference 0339826 (United States clients).

StoneX Financial (Canada) Inc. — CIRO, licence/reference CIRO Investment Dealer (Canadian clients).

StoneX Europe Ltd — CySEC, licence/reference 400/21 (EEA / Cyprus).

StoneX Financial Ltd — FCA, licence/reference 113942 (United Kingdom clients).

StoneX Financial Pte. Ltd. — MAS, licence/reference MAS Capital Markets Services licence (Singapore clients).

StoneX Financial Inc. — NFA, licence/reference 0339826 (United States clients).

Client Protection Measures

FOREX.com says retail client money is held separately from company funds. The scope and legal operation of client-money safeguards depend on the relevant entity and rules; segregation does not remove trading risk or guarantee recovery in every insolvency scenario.

Negative balance protection is not universal. Its availability depends on jurisdiction and client classification, and professional accounts may not receive the same protection as retail accounts. Do not assume the safeguard applies to a US account or to every product.

Qualifying retail clients of StoneX Europe Ltd may be eligible for Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund cover up to €20,000. UK clients may also have access to FSCS cover if eligible. Compensation arrangements are entity- and eligibility-specific, not a general guarantee for all FOREX.com clients.

Spreads and Commissions

Pricing combines spread-only accounts with RAW pricing, where a commission is charged alongside a raw spread. The Standard account is primarily spread-only, while the RAW account’s commission depends on the entity and account terms. For US RAW accounts, the commission is $7 per $100,000 USD notional traded per side, or $14 for a round trip at that notional.

Published spread figures use different measures: the Standard account has a starting spread of 1.2 pips, while EUR/USD and GBP/USD average spreads are quoted at 0.8 and 1.8 pips respectively. These are not interchangeable measures, and actual spreads are floating and can widen in volatile conditions. Gold (XAU/USD) is quoted at 0.3 points and the S&P 500 CFD at 0.4 points.

Other Trading and Non-Trading Charges

Overnight positions can incur swap charges, and currency conversion fees may apply when the account currency differs from the transaction currency. An inactivity fee of $15 per month applies after 12 months. FOREX.com charges no deposit or withdrawal fee, but other payment providers or banks may have their own charges.

Why Does FOREX.com’s RAW Commission Change With Currency Notional?

FOREX.com’s US RAW commission is calculated from the trade’s value in US dollars, rather than charging exactly $7 for every 100,000 units of base currency. The rate is $7 per $100,000 of USD notional on each side. A 100,000-unit USD/JPY trade has $100,000 of USD notional and incurs $14 for a round trip. At EUR/USD 1.1000, a 100,000-euro trade represents $110,000, so the corresponding round-trip commission is $15.40. Add the RAW spread to those figures to estimate dealing cost. The distinction becomes increasingly relevant as position sizes or exchange rates change.

FOREX.com Account Types

4.9/5

Account availability and platform compatibility depend on the entity and setup. Standard pricing is primarily spread-only; RAW pricing combines raw spreads with commission. MetaTrader accounts are designed for MetaTrader use and automated strategies, with the available platform and minimum funding terms varying by region. Account terms should be checked with the relevant entity before funding: the general minimum is $100, but account-level terms do not establish a universal minimum across all account types and jurisdictions.

How to Open an Account with FOREX.com

Identity verification is required before an account can be funded, used for trading or used to withdraw. Applicants typically provide government-issued photo identification and proof of address; US applicants also provide an SSN or TIN. The account holder’s name must match the submitted documents, and third-party trading is not permitted. Verification is usually completed within one to two business days, but this is an estimate rather than a guaranteed timeframe.

Margin Requirements and Risk Management

4.9/5

Leverage and margin depend on the instrument, contracting entity, jurisdiction and client classification. For major currency pairs, the retail maximum is 50:1 for US clients and generally 30:1 for UK and EU clients; other products may have lower limits. These are not universal limits for every FOREX.com account or market.

Margin call and close-out arrangements also vary. The general figures include a 100% margin-call level and a 50% stop-out level, while some MetaTrader accounts may have a 100% close-out level. Confirm the applicable terms for the account rather than treating either figure as universal.

Negative balance protection may apply to some retail clients but is not guaranteed across all entities or client classifications. Hedging is generally available outside the US where local rules permit it; US rules require FIFO treatment and do not permit direct hedging of opposing positions in the same pair. Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and a margin close-out does not prevent losses in all market conditions.

Trading Platforms and Execution

4.6/5

Platforms and Trading Features

Trading is available through FOREX.com’s proprietary web and mobile platforms, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView, subject to account and regional availability. The proprietary platforms include charting and market-analysis features. MetaTrader supports expert advisers and signal services; copy trading is facilitated through MT4 Signals. TradingView offers charting and community trade ideas, while FOREX.com also provides research, an economic calendar, market news and educational material.

API access is available for eligible Standard or commission accounts by request. FOREX.com’s VPS hosting for MT4 and MT5 is provided by Liquidity Connect. Free access is conditional on maintaining a $5,000 account balance and trading at least 10 round-trip mini lots, or equivalent, per calendar month; eligibility is reviewed monthly and access can be lost if the criteria are not met.

Order Execution and Trading Restrictions

Scalping and news trading are permitted. Fast-moving markets, including around news releases, can bring wider spreads and fills above or below the intended price. FOREX.com can also provide price improvement when a better level is available; neither outcome is guaranteed.

Direct hedging is not permitted for US clients under FIFO rules, although the treatment of other strategies and products depends on the entity and local requirements. Platform tools and automated trading capabilities do not remove execution, market or leverage risk.

Market Coverage and Accessibility

Check the product specification and account terms applicable to your location before trading; CFD access does not mean ownership of the underlying asset.

Key Competitive Differences

OANDA’s Standard account has a starting spread of 0.6 pips, compared with FOREX.com’s Standard starting spread of 1.2 pips. tastyfx’s Standard account has a starting spread of 0.8 pips. These figures do not establish a like-for-like cost ranking because they do not align on jurisdiction, instrument, measurement period or all pricing conditions, and starting spreads are not the same as typical trading costs.

OANDA’s account options include a Standard account with no initial deposit and higher-tier options subject to deposit or trading-volume conditions. tastyfx’s evidence covers forex, whereas FOREX.com provides several market categories, although actual product access depends on entity and location. Consider OANDA if its account thresholds and terms better suit your needs, or tastyfx if its US forex-focused offering fits your intended trading. Compare current local terms before choosing between them.

Who Is FOREX.com Best For?

Traders Who May Benefit

FOREX.com may suit active traders who want a choice of proprietary and third-party platforms, access to research and analysis, or tools for algorithmic trading. Traders considering Standard versus RAW pricing can assess whether spread-only pricing or a commission-based model better matches their trading frequency and typical position sizes.

Traders Who May Prefer Alternatives

It may be less suitable for traders who need one consistent leverage limit or protection regime across jurisdictions, or who want direct hedging while trading through the US entity. Infrequent traders should account for the $15 monthly inactivity fee after 12 months, while cost-sensitive traders should compare the full spread, commission, conversion and overnight charges for their own instruments and account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FOREX.com offer negative balance protection?

It may apply to some retail clients, depending on jurisdiction and contracting entity. It is not universal, and professional clients may not receive the same protection. Confirm the account-specific terms before trading.

Can US clients hedge opposing positions on the same currency pair?

No. US clients are subject to FIFO rules that prohibit direct hedging by holding opposing positions in the same pair. Hedging availability outside the US depends on local rules and the relevant entity.

What extra charges should FOREX.com clients consider?

In addition to spreads or RAW-account commissions, overnight swaps and currency conversion fees may apply. An inactivity fee of $15 per month applies after 12 months. FOREX.com charges no deposit or withdrawal fee, but third-party payment or bank charges may still apply.
